How Long Does a CSCS Card Last?

Most CSCS cards last five years. The exception is the Green Labourer card, where the first one issued lasts two years.

You can renew from six months before the expiry date, through the My CSCS app, and it costs £36. An expired card is not valid for site access. Five years for most cards, including the Blue Skilled Worker, both Gold cards, the Black Manager card and the White cards. All of them can be renewed at the end of that period.The Green Labourer card is the exception worth knowing about. Since February 2025 the first Labourer card issued lasts two years rather than five. After that you renew for five years, provided you are still working in a labouring role. If you got your first Green card recently and assumed you had five years, check the date printed on it.

Red cards are different again. They are temporary by design, covering trainees, apprentices and experienced workers still qualifying, and their expiry is set to match the end of that training period rather than a fixed term. A card is valid from the date it is issued until the expiry date printed on the front, and not a day longer.

That sounds obvious but it is worth stating plainly, because two other dates run alongside it and people conflate them:

• Your health and safety test pass is valid for two years, which is a shorter cycle than the card and expires independently.
• Your qualification, in most cases, does not expire at all. The Level 1 Award behind a Green card, for example, meets the training requirement permanently.

So a card that has run out does not mean your training has run out. Usually it means one document needs renewing and possibly a test needs resitting, not that you start again.

The practical implication: check the expiry date on your card and the date of your last test pass separately. They will not be the same, and the test pass is the one that catches people out.

Renew through the My CSCS app, which is the quickest route for an individual. The app holds your existing card details, tells you what evidence it needs and processes the application.

Employers and training providers renewing on behalf of a workforce use CSCS Online with an employer account instead, which allows multiple applications at once. Once the renewal is approved you can access the digital version of your card immediately and use it for site access while the physical card is in the post. That is a genuine improvement on how the scheme used to work and it removes most of the risk of a short gap.

One thing to expect: for some occupations CSCS require a copy of your qualification certificate before they will renew, so the correct titles and endorsements appear on the card. If that applies to you, CSCS will contact you to ask for it. Having it to hand before you start saves a delay.

From six months before the date printed on your card. That is the window CSCS gives you, and there is no advantage in waiting.

There is less agreement about how long afterwards you can still renew. The main CSCS website states cards can be renewed up to a year after the expiry date, and current industry guidance says the same. The CSCS Help Centre says up to six months. Those two pages do not match, and the difference matters, because past the deadline a renewal is no longer possible and you are making a fresh application instead.

The weight of evidence points to twelve months. We would still not plan around it. Check the position in the My CSCS app for your specific card, and better still renew before expiry so the question never arises.Setting a reminder six months out is the practical answer.

It gives you time to resit the health and safety test if your pass has lapsed, and time to find qualification evidence if it has gone astray, without ever having a gap in cover.

Three things. A current health and safety test pass:

The CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass must be within the last two years at the point you apply, at the level relevant to your occupation. This catches more people out than anything else, because the test pass runs on a different cycle to the card itself and it is easy to assume the two expire together.

Evidence you still qualify: For a skilled card that means the qualification the card was issued against. For a Labourer card it means confirming you are still working in a labouring role.

The fee: £36, the same as a new application.

It is also worth knowing that scheme rules can change between one card and the next. CSCS say as much themselves. The qualification or test requirements for your card may not be identical to when you last applied, so it is worth checking the requirements rather than assuming nothing has moved.

Two separate things happen, and it helps to keep them apart.

The card stops working straight away. From the expiry date it is invalid for site access. It will fail a check at induction and you should assume you cannot get on site until a new one is approved.

There is no grace period on that part.

Renewal is still possible for a while. Being expired does not automatically mean starting from scratch. Within the window described above you can still renew rather than reapply, which is quicker and needs less evidence. Past that deadline you are making a new application, which usually means passing the health and safety test again and providing full evidence of your qualifications. The cost is the same but the effort is not.

Either way, the real cost of a lapsed card is the work you miss while it is sorted out. On a rolling contract that can be considerably more than any fee.

Sometimes what looks like a renewal should really be an upgrade, and CSCS specifically flag this.

If you have gained a qualification or changed role since your last card, you may now need a different card rather than a renewal of the old one. Someone who held a Green Labourer card while completing a Level 2 NVQ should be applying for a Blue Skilled Worker card. Someone who has moved into supervision should be looking at a Gold Supervisor card.

This is not only about progression. Holding the wrong card for the work you actually do can get you refused site access, because a card is meant to evidence competence for that specific job. A skilled worker carrying a Labourer card is a recognised problem at induction.

No. Red cards are temporary by design and this surprises people.

They cover trainees, apprentices, provisional entrants and experienced workers still working towards a qualification, and the expiry date is set to match the end of that training period rather than a fixed term. Once it passes, the answer is not a renewal but an application for the permanent card your completed qualification entitles you to.

The restrictions are tighter than most people realise. The Red Provisional card lasts six months and can only be applied for once, so there is no second run at it. The Red Experienced Worker card is a one year card designed to give you a window to finish a Level 2 NVQ, and once it expires you cannot apply for another.

If you are approaching the end of an apprenticeship or an NVQ, plan for that transition rather than for a renewal. Leaving it until the red card expires means a gap while the new application is processed, at exactly the point you have finished qualifying and want to be working.

The same applies to provisional and trainee cards, which sit in the same family and follow the same logic.

£36, the standard card fee.

If your health and safety test pass has also expired you will need to sit it again, which currently costs £23.50 and is booked through CITB. That takes a renewal to £59.50 rather than £36, and it is the most common reason people end up paying more than they expected.

There is a third cost that catches out supervisors and managers specifically, and it is the largest of the three.Gold Supervisor cards sit on an SSSTS qualification and Black Manager cards on an SMSTS. Both need refreshing periodically, and if yours has lapsed you may need to complete a refresher course before the card can be renewed. That costs considerably more than the card fee and the test put together, and it takes days rather than minutes.

So if you hold a Gold or Black card you have three dates to keep track of rather than two: the card, the health and safety test pass, and the SSSTS or SMSTS behind it. Check all three at the same time.
